2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Change Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a distinct direction.
The president noted that the team is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Key Hires
The news echoes a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from the president's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the recent years creating and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.
The President

Game Information and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 alongside a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Take on the competition with unique powers, risks, and tests that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."
The game does not have an confirmed launch window or consoles, but players can expect more updates as development advances.
