Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his future after another heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth loss in 12 games, representing the team's poorest streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got plenty of backing from the top,” the coach stated.
“It's important to turn it around and secure a win of course but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that people question you.”
He added, “I accept my role. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a tough spot but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Club Management
When asked to elaborate on his conversations with the team officials, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular conversations we have I perceive the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Recurring Failings and Player Reaction
The manager highlighted recurring failings from his team in their European defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Jones was blunter in his view of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” the midfielder remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a spell such as this with performances so bad.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until that badge is removed, we’re always going to battle.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
