British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
