Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
