Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Manama, as the country executed strikes throughout the Middle East in retaliation for a large-scale and ongoing attack targeting the nation by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area near the main base of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The full scale of any destruction is uncertain and the US has remained silent.

Missile Defenses Activated

In other parts of the Middle East, the UAE, the State of Qatar and Kuwait - each hosting US military bases - reported they have intercepted incoming projectiles in their territorial skies.

In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry stated it had intercepted several missiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the Middle East.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard declared it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of operation "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the offensive on Iran carried out by the US and Israel on Saturday.

That US-Israeli operation - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far focused on areas linked to the the regime, with President Trump calling on the Iranian people to rise up against the government.

In the State of Israel, sirens were heard across the country after the Israel Defense Forces said it had detected an barrage of missiles from Iran.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Arab Emirates announced that the nation has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"UAE air defence systems responded to the projectiles with great effectiveness and shot down a series of missiles," the statement continued.

It said missile fragments fell on a populated district in the capital, resulting in some material damage and fatalities.

The US Air Force is stationed at the Al Dhafra base, south of the Emirati capital, along with the Emirati Air Force.
