The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.
Unanimous Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.
The public have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Presidential Signature
The measure next will be sent to the president for his approval. The president signaled on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.
Even though the president has for months rejected the outcry over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.
Reaction
Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a viewing area, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
