Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning best player.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
