The Gunners' Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending This Coming Year

The North London club has officially announced that its much-debated sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Origins and Examination

This deal, estimated to cost around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism stems from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 militia in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for delivering an "outrageous" snub to the Congolese government by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat ThérÚse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda serves as a division of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and continued this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

Nonetheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the original goals of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” stated an Gunners' release.

The announcement added that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's ambition to become an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while executing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and inspire greater participation in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a banner that read “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

During that period, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the same period that has caused the logo being carried on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
