Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
