This Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

Marking the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators and the Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with exclusive merchandise. Fans can look forward to products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the institution's theme. For collectors, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated volume packed with stunning illustrations that show creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially is the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish once trainers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin might have created if the famous islands teemed with flying-types rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release promos for major tournaments and crossover partnerships. Many such collector items often feature the iconic electric rodent who serves as the series face. The factor setting this latest promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. Although exact measurements have not been immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with customers limited to just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per a company statement, some of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the institution itself. But, a wider release is slated for specific stores within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire the card through the official web shop. While reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those unable to attend, consider an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City later this year.

"All profits of sales made in the Museum shop and its online store, which covers Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding answers to the planetary emergency," the statement says.
