The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building in the background assisted us verify the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
