Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
